World Down Syndrome Day
WHEREAS: World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually on March 21 to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and celebrate the abilities, contributions, and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome; andWHEREAS: the date March 21 signifies the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome, making this day a meaningful opportunity to increase public understanding and acceptance; and
WHEREAS: individuals with Down syndrome enrich our communities through their talents, relationships, and participation in education, employment, recreation, and community life; and
WHEREAS: the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County is a registered non-profit organization that provides programs, resources, advocacy, and support to individuals with Down syndrome and their families throughout Simcoe County, fostering inclusion, independence, and lifelong well-being; and
WHEREAS: promoting awareness and inclusion strengthens our community by encouraging respect, dignity, and equal opportunities for all residents;
NOW THEREFORE, I, James Leduc, Mayor of the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury and members of Council, do hereby proclaim March 21, 2026, as World Down Syndrome Day in Simcoe County, and all residents are encouraged to recognize this day by celebrating inclusion, raising awareness, and supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families
