Crossing Guard Program

The Town's crossing guard program helps elementary school aged children cross the road, for both the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) and the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB).

Guards are scheduled to be onsite 30 minutes before and after the morning and afternoon bell.

Guard Locations

  • Miller Park Avenue and West Park Avenue
  • Aishford Road and West Park Avenue
  • Professor Day PXO (just north of Fieldcrest)
  • Blue Dasher Boulevard/Northgate Drive and Professor Day Drive
  • Fletcher Street and Church Street
  • Fletcher Street and Northgate Drive
  • Fletcher Street/Britannia Avenue and Barrie Street
  • Britannia Avenue and Colborne Street
  • Simcoe Road and Catania Avenue
  • Maplegrove Avenue and Catania Avenue
  • Colborne PXO (at St. Marie of the Incarnation)
  • Simcoe PXO (at St. Charles)
  • Simcoe PXO (at Marshview)

While the Town endeavours to have all locations staffed by guards, staffing shortages have meant that a guard may not always be present.

Please Remember

We would also like to remind motorists to help keep our children safe:

  • SLOW DOWN when approaching a school zone
  • COME TO A COMPLETE STOP once a Crossing Guard raises their stop sign
  • CONTINUE only after all children and the Crossing Guard are safely across the road
  • OBSERVE all no stopping and no parking signs and park only in designated areas

Request a Crossing Guard

If you are concerned about the safety of school children crossing the road at a specific location, you can request the completion of a Crossing Guard Warrant.

Transportation staff will conduct a warrant based on the Ontario Traffic Council – Crossing Guard Guide:

  • Minimum of 40 school aged pedestrians (parents included when walking with children)
  • Site inspection
  • Gap Study or Exposure Index depending on crossing design

Once the review is complete, a report is provided to Committee/Council with recommendations. When making a request, please provide the following information:

  • Name of school
  • Reason for request
  • The intersection or location where you would like a crossing guard
  • Your name, address and phone number
