Safety Tips for Drivers

School zones are some of the busiest and most unpredictable areas on our roads. Each day, children are walking, biking, or being dropped off and picked up, often during peak traffic times when drivers may already be rushed or distracted. That is why it is so important for every driver to take extra precautions and remain alert when travelling through these areas. Simple actions like slowing down, avoiding distractions, and obeying posted signs can make the difference between a safe commute and a serious incident.

Drivers play a critical role in protecting the safety of children, families, and school staff. By following the rules of the road and staying attentive, you help create a safer environment for everyone. Here are some key tips for driving safely in and around school zones:

  • Reduce speed in school zones and be aware of poor road conditions caused by inclement weather.
  • Be prepared to stop at all times and expect the unexpected, as children may cross at the wrong place or run into traffic without warning.
  • Give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination.
  • Stop for school buses and be aware of movement in front of or behind buses.
  • Refrain from completing U-turns and passing other vehicles in school zones.
  • Obey the rules of the road, including posted speed limits and all parking and traffic regulations, such as “No Stopping” or “No Parking”
  • Yield to pedestrians and obey crossing guard signals.
  • When approaching a pedestrian crossover, yield the whole roadway to pedestrians. Failing to do so may result in fines of up to $1,000 and four demerit points.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions in the vehicle.
  • During pick-up/drop-off, ensure children enter and exit by the passenger side of the vehicle.
  • Keep zones such as fire and bus zones clear.
  • Leave nine metres (or 29 feet) between the car and crosswalks and/or stop signs when parking to ensure visibility of those crossing.
  • Stay back 0.6 metres (or two feet) from private driveways.
  • If cycling, dismount your bike before crossing the street.
