WHEREAS, Canada is a multilingual and culturally diverse nation that recognizes linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of its multicultural identity; and
WHEREAS, over 1.3 million Canadians identify as Hispanic, with Spanish standing as the third most spoken non-official language in the country; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is home to a vibrant Hispanic community of over 1,600 year-round residents and approximately 900 seasonal workers who arrive annually from Latin America to support the Holland Marsh, all of whom contribute to the town’s agricultural success, economic growth, and cultural richness; and
WHEREAS, April 23 is designated by the United Nations as Spanish Language Day to celebrate global multilingualism and honor the history, traditions, and achievements of Spanish-speaking communities worldwide; and
WHEREAS, proclaiming Spanish Language Day in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury reaffirms our commitment to the values of inclusion and respect for the diverse heritage that strengthens our community;
NOW THEREFORE I, Mayor James Leduc, on behalf of the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury Council, do hereby proclaim April 23, 2026, as “Spanish Language Day” in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury and encourage all residents to celebrate the cultural and linguistic contributions of our Spanish-speaking community members.
