Rare Disease Day

WHEREAS, approximately 1 in 12 Canadians—many of whom are children—are affected by one of over 7,000 identified rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, these individuals, along with their families and caregivers, often face significant challenges, including delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, and a lack of accessible support resources; and
WHEREAS, 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease, yet many conditions remain undiagnosed for years due to limited research and awareness; and
WHEREAS, Rare Disease Day, observed annually on the last day of February (February 29 in leap years), aims to raise awareness and generate change for those affected by rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, awareness leads to action by helping drive research funding, improving healthcare services, and promoting workplace and community inclusion for people with rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, this day unites patients, families, caregivers, medical professionals, researchers, and policymakers to advocate for improved healthcare, increased research, and greater public understanding of rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury recognizes the importance of supporting individuals and families affected by rare diseases within our community;
