Update on York Region’s Holland River Bridge Rehabilitation Project
We understand that many of our residents are feeling frustrated by the traffic delays caused by the ongoing Holland River Bridge rehabilitation project. We know the impact on your daily commute is real, especially during the morning and afternoon rush hours, but this work is necessary to ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the bridge.

We want to thank everyone for your patience and continued cooperation as this important infrastructure work progresses.
About the Project
This project is being completed by York Region and is essential to extend the life of the bridge and maintain safety for all travelers. The work will take place in two stages:
- Stage 1: Fall 2025 to Winter 2025 (South side)
- Stage 2: Spring 2026 to Fall 2026 (North side)
Note: Repair work and lane reductions will be limited during the winter months.
Stage 1 of the project began on Monday, September 15, 2025, and involves replacing the bridge deck joints and repairing bridge girders. This follows previous work in 2023 on the substructure and timber pile foundation of the bridge.
Addressing Common Concerns
We have received many concerns from commuters and will continue to work with York Region to address issues as they arise.
In response, York Region offers the following information:
- Nighttime work is not feasible for this project. The type of rehabilitation work underway is complex and requires daylight for the safety of both workers and travelers.
- No road closures are planned, but lane reductions are required to create a safe work zone for crews and to ensure emergency services have proper access.
- Alternate routes are encouraged. The Region shares detailed traffic and road data with major navigation tools like Waze and Google Maps. These tools provide faster, real-time updates and more dynamic routing options than static detour signs. This approach ensures drivers are getting the most current and accurate traffic information. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes including the Hwy 400 and Hwy 9 corridors.
- Emergency services have been notified about the project and are working closely with York Region to ensure safe and reliable access through the work zone at all times.
- Several measures are in place to support traffic flow, including:
- Temporary lane markings and concrete barriers
- Adjusted speed limits
- Portable message boards with real-time updates
- Adjusted signal timing on portions of Highway 11 between Green Lane and the Bradford boundary
Staying Informed
For project updates, residents are encouraged to visit York Region’s project page. The Town of BWG will also continue to share project updates on Facebook and Instagram.
We know this project is disruptive, but this work is a key investment in the safety and future of this important piece of local infrastructure. The next few months are going to be challenging for commuters, but we will continue working closely with York Region to provide our residents with important project updates. York Region’s Highway 11 Road Reconstruction project is also expected to be completed later this year, which will ease congestion along that corridor.
We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as this vital work continues.
