The Role of Committee Members
  • Committee members attend regular committee meetings, which are usually held once a month in the evening. Members are required to attend regularly, as no decisions can be made without the majority of members present.
  • Members will also be required to attend other functions such as Council meetings, and to conduct work on behalf of the committee outside of regular meetings.
  • Committee members bring their own insight and experience to the group, as well as conduct the hands-on work required to achieve the mandate of their committee/board.
  • Each committee or board has its own mandate and terms of reference. Many committees involve tasks such as budget approval, business planning, policy making and advocacy.
  • Committees generally include members of Council in addition to members of the public. Members are considered community leaders in the area that their committee/board pertains to.
  • Committee recommendations are provided to Council for consideration.
  • Members are volunteers, and are therefore unpaid. Some of the mandatory boards do provide an honorarium.
