Red Light Cameras to Begin Operating September 24

Drivers in Bradford West Gwillimbury will soon see the Town’s red light cameras in operation, with the program officially launching Thursday, September 24.

The Town has installed red light cameras at five intersections throughout the community. The cameras are designed to detect vehicles that enter an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red.

“Red light cameras are another tool to help encourage safe driving and reduce collisions at our intersections,” said Mayor James Leduc. “We want everyone travelling through Bradford West Gwillimbury to get where they are going safely. I encourage drivers to pay attention, follow the rules of the road and never enter an intersection after the light has turned red.”

The Red Light Camera (RLC) program is administered under Ontario’s Administrative Penalties framework, the same framework used for parking enforcement. Penalties are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle and do not result in demerit points or affect a driver’s insurance.

When a potential red-light violation is detected, the camera system takes two photographs: the first captures the vehicle at or near the stop bar, while the second shows the vehicle in or proceeding through the intersection. If a contravention is confirmed, the registered owner will receive a Penalty Order outlining details of the incident, including the length of the yellow and red signals and the vehicle’s recorded speed.

Camera locations

Red light cameras are located at:

• Holland Street West and Sideroad 10 – eastbound and westbound
• Holland Street West and West Park Avenue – westbound
• Holland Street West and Professor Day Drive/Melbourne Drive – eastbound and westbound
• Holland Street East and Bridge/Dissette Street – westbound
• Line 8 and Barrie Street – eastbound and westbound

The West Park Avenue and Professor Day Drive/Melbourne Drive locations are within Community Safety Zones, where higher penalties apply.

Camera locations were selected based on collision statistics, traffic volumes, red-light-running data, the presence of vulnerable road users, and current and planned construction projects.

Signs identifying the camera locations have been installed in advance of the launch, as required by provincial legislation. Signs must be in place at least 10 days before cameras become operational.

Penalties

Penalty amounts are established under Ontario Regulation 355/22:

• Outside a Community Safety Zone: $328.25, including a $260 set fine, $60 victim fine surcharge and $8.25 MTO search fee.
• Inside a Community Safety Zone: $493.25, including a $400 set fine, $85 victim fine surcharge and $8.25 MTO search fee.

Payments and appeals

Residents who receive a Penalty Order will be able to make a payment or submit an appeal request through the Town’s Red Light Camera webpage. The webpage provides access to an online portal for payments and appeals.

Payments can also be made in person at the Town’s Administrative Office at 100 Dissette Street during regular business hours.
