BWG to Install Red Light Cameras

The Town has received approval from the Ministry of Transportation to operate a Red Light Camera (RLC) program with an amendment to O. Reg. 277/99. The RLC program was passed by Council in November 2025 as part of the 2026 budget and includes the installation of 8 red light cameras.

The Red Light Camera program is designed to increase community safety at intersections, help reduce red light running and collisions. 

“The safety of our residents is always our top priority. Red light cameras will help make our roads safer by encouraging drivers to slow down and obey traffic signals. This program is about preventing collisions; protecting pedestrians, cyclists and motorists; and creating safer intersections for everyone in our community.” – Mayor James Leduc

RLC is camera system that detects and captures images of vehicles entering an intersection when the traffic signal is indicating red. The system captures two sequential photographs of the vehicle approaching the stop bar and going through the intersection. The images are then reviewed by a Provincial Offences Officer designated by the Ministry of Transportation and a penalty order is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Penalty Orders are issued under the Administrative Penalty framework and do not impact vehicle insurance or involve demerit points. 

RLC Cameras and signage will be installed in the coming weeks and are anticipated to go live in September 2026. RLC locations were selected based on collision statistics, traffic volumes, locations near vulnerable road users and red light run data. The following intersections will have cameras installed:

• Line 8 and Barrie Street (east and west bound)

• Holland Street E and Bridge Street/Dissette Street (west bound)

• Holland Street West and Professor Day Drive/Melbourne Drive (east and west bound) 

• Holland Street West and West Park Avenue (westbound) 

• Holland Street West and Sideroad 10 (east and west bound)

Over the next few weeks, residents may notice camera/sign installation and testing taking place at the designated locations. Please note these are for testing/calibration purposes only, and the program will not be operational until September 2026. Further public communications will occur at that time.
