Nigerian Independence Day
WHEREAS October 1st marks the historic anniversary of Nigeria gaining its sovereignty and independence in 1960, standing as a monumental day of pride, resilience, and cultural heritage for Nigerians worldwide; and
WHEREAS the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is home to a vibrant, rapidly growing, and deeply dedicated Nigerian-Canadian community whose members enrich our municipality every day as healthcare providers, educators, entrepreneurs, professionals, and civic volunteers; and
WHEREAS the Nigerian-Canadian community actively fosters unity, promotes cultural awareness, and strengthens the social and economic fabric of our town, contributing directly to Bradford West Gwillimbury’s identity as a welcoming and prosperous place to live; and
WHEREAS the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury firmly embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognizing that our community is made stronger, more resilient, and more cohesive by celebrating the distinct heritages of all our residents; and
WHEREAS raising the Nigerian Flag at the Town Hall signifies our collective respect for the journey of the Nigerian people, honors the contributions of the diaspora, and reinforces our commitment to cultural harmony;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor James Leduc, on behalf of the Town Council of Bradford West Gwillimbury, do hereby proclaim October 1, 2026, as “Nigerian Independence Day” in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury, and encourage all residents to recognize, celebrate, and appreciate the rich history and outstanding contributions of our Nigerian-Canadian neighbours.
