World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15, 2022

Older Ontarians deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them to serve as leaders, mentors, volunteers, and important and active members of this province; and

In 2006, the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action, proclaimed a day to recognize the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue; and

2022 marks the 17th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Its recognition will promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older adults; and

CHATS and the Prevention of Senior Abuse Network Simcoe County (PSAN-SC) recognize the importance of taking action to create social change to prevent and raise awareness to educate older adults about their rights; and

Locally, thousands of seniors are at risk of being abused each year and ageism is a major cause of elder abuse in Ontario; and

Preventing abuse of older adults will help improve their quality of life and allow older adults to continue to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Ontario; and

Where there is respect there can be no abuse; therefore, residents of Bradford West Gwillimbury are urged to Stop Abuse and Restore Respect.

That His Worship Mayor Rob Keffer and Members of Council proclaim June 15, 2022, as WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
