Enbridge Gas teams up with Bradford West Gwillimbury Fire & Emergency Services to Reduce Fire and Carbon Monoxide Deaths through Safe Community Project Zero

IMG_2711.JPGBradford West Gwillimbury, ON (January 12, 2023) – Today, Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas) and Bradford West Gwillimbury Fire & Emergency Services (BWGFES) announced they are working together to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero.

BWGFES received 288 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Safe Community Project Zero–a public education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) that will provide more than 8,000 alarms to residents in 50 municipalities across Ontario.

This year, Enbridge Gas invested $250,000 in Safe Community Project Zero, and over the past 14 years, the program has provided more than 76,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.

When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a by-product of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels.

“Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ for a reason, and evidence shows that prevention saves lives. We know that the best way to avoid carbon monoxide exposure is to eliminate it at the source by properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment, and that the alarms are a critical second line of defense to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning,” says Jason McArthur, Manager Operations, GTA East Operations, Enbridge Gas.

“The objective of Safe Community Project Zero is to deliver combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to residents in Ontario communities who need them the most,” says Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of the FMPFSC. “It’s a program that fire departments can adopt to help educate their communities about the requirement for all Ontario homes to have a CO alarm if they have a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage.”

“We are honoured to collaborate with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Enbridge Gas to be able to distribute 288 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms within our community. Distributing the alarms also allows staff the opportunity to engage with residents and further educate on fire safety, which is one of our key
mandates in the fire service,” says Chief Thomas. “We are extremely grateful for this partnership and thank Enbridge Gas for this generous donation. Through the coming weeks, BWGFES will be working with local organizations to distribute the combination alarms to those less fortunate.”

BWG’s newly built fire station (2021) located at 77 Melbourne Drive, is a full-time station with a complement of both full-time and volunteer firefighters who cater to BWG’s diverse population of approximately 36,000. The department is committed to protecting life, property and the environment within our community, which is achieved through emergency response, fire prevention and education. BWGFES is devoted to being a well-planned, trained and equipped emergency response agency where the safety and well-being of all involved in any emergency response is the primary goal. In 2022, BWG fire crews responded to 2,134 calls.
