The chart below outlines the service level that the Town endeavours to maintain for snow removal.

Location​Service Provided

​​Arterial Roads​

After 5-8 cm (2​-3") of snowfall, plowing begins, with the following aims:

  • all primary roads cleared within 6-12 hours of the end of snowfall, then clean-up program begins;
  • maintained to snow-packed condition (i.e. not to bare pavement);
  • sand and salt applied as needed.

Collector Roads

​​​After 8 cm (3") of snowfall, plowing begins, with the following aims:

  • all secondary roads cleared within 12-16 hours of the end of snowfall, then clean-up program begins;
  • maintained to snow-packed condition​;
  • sand and salt applied as needed​.


Local Priority Roads

​​​After 8 cm (3") of snowfall, plowing begins, with the following aims:

  • all local priority roads cleared within 12-16 hours of the end of snowfall, then clean-up program begins;
  • maintained to snow-packed condition​;
  • sand and salt applied as needed​.

Local Roads

​After 8-10 cm (3-4") of snowfall and all primary and secondary roads have been addressed, plowing begins, with the following aims:

  • all roads cleared within 16-24 hours of the end of snowfall, then clean-up program begins;
  • maintained to snow-packed condition​;
  • sand applied only in extreme conditions.

Sidewalks

After 8 cm (3") of snowfall, plowing begins, with the following aims​:

  • sidewalks on primary roads addressed first, working towards secondary and then local priority roads;
  • sidewalks around schools are given higher priority on the route taken by the sidewalk plows, with all sidewalks to be cleared within 48 hours of the end of snowfall;
  • maintained to snow-packed conditions;
  • sand and salt applied as needed.
